Franschhoek Holiday Guide

The literal translation of Franschhoek is French corner.

Franschhoek’s remarkable heritage commenced with the arrival of the French Huguenots in 1668. Many of the Huguenots were granted farming land by the Dutch government on which they established what would become some of the world’s most renowned wine farms.

As one would expect with its strong French ties, Franschhoek boasts of some of the countries (and indeed the worlds) top restaurants.

Franschhoek’s  reputation as the food and wine capital of South Africa is well deserved and testified to by not just the local populace, but the many hundreds of thousands of visitors to Franschhoek who come each year to enjoy its culinary delights and fine wines.

Location of Franschhoek

In many people’s opinion Franschhoek is the most beautiful wine valley in the world. The splendor of the wine farms (some established for some 300 years) is flanked on both sides by imposing mountain ranges.

Littered with vines, Cape Dutch architecture, small hamlets and photo opportunities every step of the way – its must visit place.

It’s very easily accessible – just 45 minutes from Cape Town and 25 minutes for the airport. The R45 is the only road from Paarl, Stellenbosch but for those seeking a memorable scenic drive should enter form Villiersdorp over the Franschhoek pass.

The Franschhoek Vibe

The many characters of the elegant wine farms, the cosy, welcoming vibe of the impeccable high street, the tempting smells of some of the finest cuisine all blend into the most heartfelt of welcomes.

Franschhoek is alive with personalities; it’s sometimes vibrant and busy, sometimes a little quieter and more intimate – but it is all always friendly.

Franschhoek Amenities

Although well located to access most of Cape Town’s attractions, Franschhoek itself can certainly keep the visitor occupied with any number of activities.
