With just three roads into Hout Bay and a real community vibe, Hout Bay certainly lives up to its nickname – The Republic of Hout Bay.

Lying in a beautiful valley, Hout Bay boasts both Scenic Mountain and panoramic ocean views. Starting off life as a fishing community, Hout Bay has managed to successfully blend the old with the new and still has a fully operational fishing industry nestled in with some superb tourist attractions and amenities.

Today it homes some 25,000 people, many of whom were visitors that fell in love with Hout Bay and moved there permanently. Hout bay is one of South Africas most popular tourist and holiday destinations.

Take the test and ask anyone who has visited South Africa about Hout Bay and most will have very fond memories.

The Location of Hout Bay

Hout Bay is situated about 20 minutes away from the centre of Cape Town along the Western Sea Board. It provides guest with easy access to the airport and most of Cape Town’s tourist attractions.

There are only 3 access roads to Hout Bay and visitors should make sure they try them all.

  1. The coastal road from Cape Town will take you through the tourist Mecca of Camps Bay and sweep you along towards Hout Bay, with mountain views on the one side and sea views on the other. The road gives you the sensation that you are driving on the edge of South Africa. As you enter Hout Bay on Suikerbossie Hill, be prepared for the breathtaking views of the valley, the glory of the Atlantic Ocean and the South African sun lighting it all.
  2. Chapmans Peak is word renowned – it is a simply awesome drive – a must for any Cape Town Tourist. The road is a toll road, though very affordable, and it is prone to closures in bad weather and when under going repairs.
  3. Constantia Nek links Hout Bay with the Constantia Suburb, one of South Africa’s most prominent wine producing valleys (as well as one if its most beautiful). When driving to Hout Bay from the Constantia side, pause and look back for a birds eye view of False Bay, then look to your right and you will see Kirstenbosch (one of the worlds largest botanical gardens). At the top of the Nek, as you drop down into the valley, you are able to view Hout Bay in all its glory.

The Hout Bay Vibe

A fishing village, a tourist destination and home to local South Africans and thousands of immigrants from many different countries – it takes a very special vibe for this all to blend into one community, but it’s a feat Hout Bay can boast to have achieved.

Residents are friendly and welcoming, the cafes are busy and social and the Sunday Craft market is the perfect place to make new friends whilst stocking up on local goods.

It’s very easy to see why so many visitors to Hout Bay decide to make it their permanent home.
