Johannesburg Holiday Guide

Description

Johannesburg also known as Jozi or Jo’burg, is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of the Gauteng province, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is also often referred to as “Egoli”, the ‘City of Gold’ due its to rich gold-mining heritage.

The city is one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world and it is one of Africa’s only three global cities, the other two being Cairo and Cape Town. While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa’s three capital cities, it does house the Constitutional Court – South Africa’s highest court.

Currently the world’s biggest inland city, Johannesburg features a number of fortified suburbs, along with a modern city centre which is teeming with towering skyscrapers, huge shopping complexes and much excitement.

The Location of Johannesburg

Johannesburg is located in the eastern plateau area of South Africa known as the Highveld, at an elevation of 1,753 metres (5,751ft). The former CBD is located on the south side of the prominent ridge called the Witwatersrand and the terrain falls to the north and south. By and large the Witwatersrand marks the watershed between the Limpopo and Vaal rivers. The north and west of the city has undulating hills while the eastern parts are flatter.

The Johannesburg Vibe

Joburg is the heartbeat of the country. It’s the economic and cultural centre of South Africa, where people work hard and play harder.

Everyone is on the move, from doing business to hitting the city’s nightspots until late. Joburg is a dynamic cosmopolitan city with great places to eat, interesting sites to visit and a good range of places to stay.
